Salt Spray Testing Standards and Implications for anti skid tire studs

January 11, 2025

Salt spray testing is a corrosion test that simulates a marine climate or a salt-spreading environment, and is used to test the corrosion resistance of anti skid tire studs in high-salt environments. For snow carbide tire studs, salt spray testing is key to ensuring their long-term stability and safety.

Salt spray testing is conducted in accordance with international standards (e.g. ISO 9227 or ASTM B117), whereby the stud is placed in a salt spray chamber to simulate a high-salt environment. The test typically lasts between 24 and 1,000 hours, depending on the application requirements of the product. The results are evaluated by observing corrosion on the surface of the tire studs (e.g., rusting, peeling of coating).

The main purpose of the salt spray test is to confirm the durability of the stud in high salt environments (e.g., de-icing of roads with salt) and to prevent degradation due to corrosion.

Salt spray-tested studs are guaranteed not to deteriorate due to corrosion in high salt environments for months or even years. Our products are salt spray tested to ensure the quality of our products, so choose quality cleats for safe travel.
