What is Screw-in Type Tire Studs?
"Screw-in studs "are the kind of metal studs with threaded shank - different from" press-in studs ", the latter is usually driven into the reserved holes on the tread and fixed with a press-in tool.
SAcrew-in studs can be screwed into the tread of a tire (usually a specially designed "studdable" winter tire), so that the studs will engage with the rubber through threads, making it more secure and detachable/reusable.
Stud tips are usually made of tungsten carbide to grasp the ground on ice and frozen surfaces, enhancing grip and braking force.
Compared with traditional press-in studs, the greatest advantage of screw-in studs is that they are detachable/reusable, relatively easy to install/remove, and more "compatible/flexible" with certain tires.
When tires are equipped with screw-in studs and travel on ice, compacted snow, ice or hard frozen roads, the tips of the metal studs will Pierce into the ice, hard snow or ice layer, playing a role of "pinning the ground", thereby significantly enhancing grip, reducing skidding, shortening braking distance, and improving acceleration and steering stability.
Compared with winter tires without nails (studdable but without nails), those with nails perform significantly better in freezing/icing conditions.
It is particularly suitable for winter driving environments with heavy ice and snow, frequently icy roads, many curves, numerous slopes, and high requirements for braking, starting, and climbing.
If your area experiences severe cold, ice, freezing or compacted snow in winter - such studs can bring a significant safety improvement.
If you decide to use screw in studs, here are some suggestions:
1. Confirm whether the tire is "studdable/ studded" - Some winter tires are designed with nail holes reserved on the tread. If not, try not to add nails by yourself.
2. Use appropriate tools (electric drill + dedicated installation head/socket) and install strictly in accordance with the instructions of the nail manufacturer - when driving in, it must be vertical, uniform and of moderate depth (usually the nail head should be flush with the surface of the tire). If it is too deep or the Angle is not right, it will damage the rubber; if it is too shallow, it is prone to fall off.
3. In the initial stage after installation (500-1000 km), maintain a low speed and drive gently to allow the rubber to adapt to the nails - do not accelerate suddenly, brake hard or drive at high speed in the initial stage.
4.Only use on icy/frozen/frozen road conditions. When the weather warms up, the road surface is dry/wet/after the ice and snow have been removed, the nails should be removed to prevent tires and A. Road surface damage and noise
5.Regular inspection/maintenance - During use, regularly check the protruding length of the nails to prevent excessive wear (reduced grip) and check if they are loose.
